and this is the first of two dips into our archive to look at all the cool stuff
that we've seen over the last 12 moths.
This week, we're all about the gadgets and the trends.
We have the high′flyers, those cheeky virtual experiences,
the makers and the hackers that we've met,
and the internet phenomenon of the year.
But we start with the hottest trend of the year`wearable tech.

We featured some beautiful clothes that light up and change colour,
with some reacting to the wearer's emotions.
But the biggest noise in wearables this year was made byspecs and watches.
2014 was, of course, the year that Google Glass finally went on sale,
along with a slew of "me too"s.
Now we have to work out just on earth we're going to use all this stuff for.
One of the most recognisable pieces of wearable tech at the moment is this
thing here′Google Glass. It's still in the development stage but, last week,
it went on sale in the United States for just one day. the price a cool $1,500.
But aside from making you stand out from the crowd...
Why is everyone looking at me like that?
..the question I think we all want answered is, will it actually be of any use ?
Will it, indeed, take off?

information without the need for hand

And this is what Ken can see. On the first page, you can see the passenger,
the registration, the number of their car and their destination. and Then
he can move on to details about that destination. For example, How can it
picked up and its time of arrival and also their Frequent Flyer number.

Yeah, I think it's the oil. Yet, it could be the carburettor.
Short of a car manual in a glove box, I'm now left with two options.
To call breakdown services and talk them through the problem.
Or, I could use a pair of these. Munich-based Metaio is developing this app
for the forthcoming Google Glass eyewear. It identifies what's under the hood,
and explains what needs doing. We're using a phone screen to show you what
I can see. In this case, it's a straightforward or oil top up that's needed. so
the app positions the relevant graphics in the eyewear, leaving my hands free
to complete the job. This tech could be useful for changing a wheel,
diagnosing more serious problems,
or training up mechanics to more accurately time their tutting and
sharping takes of breath, before quoting a three figure sum.

Google is no longer alone when it comes to produce smart glasses.
Toshiba has got in on the act as well, with what it's calling Toshiba Glass.
The hardware for this prototype glass is contained in this detachable box.
Images are projected onto a specially coated surface on the right lens.
We can see it's used as a speedometer on a push bike.
There's a heart rate monitor here, which is
showing me how many beets per minute I'd be getting if I was riding a bike,
and a weather alert has just popped up.
スマートグラスの開発に着手しているのはグーグルだけではありません。東芝はその開発
を上手く進めており、その製品は“東芝グラス”と呼ばれています。このグラスのハードは
取り外し可能な設計で、画像は特別なコーティングが施された右側のレンズに映る予定と
なっているようです。自転車に搭載されたスピードメーターが使われた様子が見えます。
心拍機のモニターがここに見えており、それは私が自転車に乗っている状況での1分間の

These glasses have three sensors, which are supposed to detect highly electrical
activity in the eye. There's also accelerometers fitted in the arms of the frame,
which monitor head movement. The data from the sensors combined to provide
the wearer with information about various health and fitness related activities,
and about how tired or drowsy they might be.
グラスには３つのセンサーが搭載されており、高い電子性で目の動きを捕捉・検出するよ
うに設計されている。また加速度センサーは腕に合わせた設計がされており、動作の向き
をチェックしている。センサーからのデータは結合され、着用者の様々な健康に関連する

And if you don't fancy face furniture in 2014, well,
you could smarten up with some wristwear. Unlike the specs,
these came in pretty much any colour, with many but not all getting their
brainpower by connecting to your smartphone. Unlike most smart watches,
this one has its own sim card, so you can send and receive call messages without
needing to be tethered to a phone. It is, however, gigantic. Now,
Any horophile will tell you what watches really need to be round.
And while Motorola's Moto 360, now on sele in the US,
has answered that call, it does have an annoying black bar at the bottom.
Here at IFA, LG's first attempt at the classic look, the G Watch R,
is a completely circular OLED display. but it will keep dimming to save power,
And then there was the watch that was announced but not on sale till next spring.

Time for the time piece de resistance. So here it is, the Apple Watch. Now, this is
one of three versions that are going to be available in different finishes and they
start at $349. Instead of just having a regular crown on a watch, this crown here,
when you rotate it, will zoom in, for example, to the home screen, it will zoom in
to maps and allow you to navigate around the watch. while on the face of it,
it might be might look like other smart watches emphasising health and fitness,
there are plenty of other differentiators, from highly customisable watch faces
to the admittedly gimmicky digital taps, which let you ping your friends with emojis.
Overall, it deeply integrates into the iPhone itself, using its sensors as well as
processing power to deliver what looks like a comprehensive app experience
on your wrist.

In the race to create a visual treat in 2014,
Mark and I went head to head to see who could discover the most impressive virtual
reality experience. I ended up winning the girl, which kind of left Mark high and dry.
I'm quite lucky because this particular demo hasn't been seen by
anybody outside of the development team yet. It's a Street luge Experience.
Now this isn't a passive experience.
I am actually controling my movement by tipping my head left or right.
This is really, really strange. Because
I'm lying down and I can see a visual representation of my body in front of me,
I'm almost convinced that is my real body.
But there's a strange disconnect between what I'm seeing.
これは視覚を扱い作り出された競争で、マークと私は最も印象的な仮想体験を味わう

気楽に進めるつもりが物凄い分量になりました。冒頭でも記述したように、訳文の
正確性は保証出来ません。私は英語のプロではありませんし、単独で英語圏の会話

原文について、どうやらHPの運営管理は総集編のみ下っ端か委託された人物が字幕
を打った可能性があります。過去の放送と総集編で字幕の単語が明らかに違う部分が

字幕入力を行った節があります。

放送記録を色々と視聴し、私が勧める1本は14年10月18日放送分です。幕張メッセで
行われたCEATECを取り扱った内容です。Clickの撮影現場と司会のスペンサー・ケリー
を自分の目で見るチャンスだっただけに、行かなかったことを後悔しました。登録さえ済
ませれば誰でも入場可能なイベントです。

基本的に文章単位の翻訳機能（サイト）は使用していません。完成した文を自分自身で
読み返しましたが、明らかに伝わり辛い個所があります。こういった自力翻訳作業をした
後に、翻訳業で生計を立てている人の訳文と比較すると、アマチュアとプロの違いを痛感
します。レベルアップの糧にする分には良いことなのかもしれません。しかしながら、英単
語のボキャブラリを増やすためには、実際に自分の五感を同時に使用する形で刷り込む
形を取らなければ、頭に入っていかないことはハッキリしました。記憶力は私の年齢も関
係しているかもしれませんが、問題の焦点を年齢だと決めつけたら、そこでお仕舞です。

予測通り、Dlifeでは総集編がカットされました。そのため、本文について翻訳文を読みや
すい形に大幅修正し、英文を文章単位に区切りました。

本文の補足です。“エンコ”とは“ロードサービス”のことです。英語ではBreakdown（故障）
services(サービス)と記述されています。
ロードサービスの末文について、“グラスを利用することで税金（VAT）や修理費用の出費
を目にする（引用する）ことなく問題の対処が可能になる”、という意味です。
“Metaio”について、私が“マタイオ”と記述しただけであって正確な読みではありません。
開発キット（SDK）の1種で、アプリ開発者向けのソフトウェアです。

上野から乗車した電車に英語圏からの観光客団体が乗車し、その日常会話を読み取ろう
と努力しましたが、私のレベルでは不可能でした。“Suntory”や“Have you ever～”などの
分かり切った単語・表現は聞き取れるものの、スピードが全く追いつきません。字幕前提の
海外ドラマ・ドキュメンタリーと違い、文章単位が読み取れていないため、笑い処となるオチ
も認識出来ない状態です。英語の知識と反射を結びつける方法としては、実用訓練以外に
好きな映像作品の字幕/音声変更が有効、という話を耳にしたことがあります。頻繁にネット
上で教材として挙がる作品が“フレンズ”です。“内容の面白さ”と“エピソードの短さ”に定評
があり、教材代わりに利用できるそうです。購入する人は居ないと思いますが、商品リンクだ
け付けておきます。
