the largest migration of people
since the Second World War.

Should they be welcomed
or should they be turned away?
At the Barbican in London, artist 【Richard Mosse】
is making 【his view clear】
with this work: Incoming.
He's used a long range infrared camera
to film the arrival of migrants and refugees
at camps across Europe.
It's actually a military tool that can detect body heat
from 30 kilometres away.
It can see through smoke and haze
day or night.

So, this is a thermographic camera.
In other words, you can actually see
people's bodies glowing
a sort of radiant, thermal glow.
And you can't really see their faces
so it kind of anonymises people.
Instead of imaging an individual,
it images a kind of biological trace.
So, it strips, sort of dehumanises a person in a way
which is appropriate
since it's a weapon's great technology.

One interesting result
of using a thermal imaging camera, 【of course,】
is that you can't tell the skin colour of the people
in the film.
They are simply people.

And, of course, that's part of 【mosse's】 point.
He says he wants to use the technology against itself
showing that the same cameras that allow missiles to see

is still one of the main challenges facing the nation.

Most are from Syria, but there are asylum seekers

I first heard about this camp
when I was covering Europe's biggest tech show, 【IFA.】
I was 【really】 surprised to learn
that there had been people living in the halls here 【too】
- even recently.

to 3D】 print cheap, 【prosthetic】 parts.
【It was impossible to get a work permit there
so】 he made the difficult decision to travel to Berlin.
【Assem】 is now an intern for Cisco
training to be an engineer
【in the Internet of Things department.】

私は毎朝8時台にキンドルタブレットでNHKWorldを開い
たまま、片目でチラ見しながら聴力だけ意識を傾けていま
す。全文を汲み取る力は有りませんが、部分的に汲み取れ
る部分が増えてきました。記憶から薄れた単語も場面解釈
に記憶が戻ることもあります。英語に意識的に触れる時間
が長い人ほど聞き流しは効果を発揮します。
