It's called South By Southwest and you may have heard us mentioning it

more traditional brands,
all looking to get a strong leg up in a connected world.
But this is the place for trend spotting emerging technologies, too,
everything from virtual reality to robotics.
More than anything, though, South By,
with a crowd of tens of thousands of digital influences,
has become a human Petri dish, a place to nurture connections
both out and about and in the hundreds of panel discussions.
This man should know, Tim Ferriss had his first self-help guide,
The 4-Hour workweek, rejected by 26 publishers.
But thanks to canny networking at South By, the book was picked up
and along with others, has become an international smash hit.

was the point at which I stopped thinking of Twitter

that's why they had gathered, and he tweeted,

When I heard that story,
I got chills because I realised what had happened was
he'd sent out the tweet, that tweet got retweeted
and so forth and I said, "My God,
"one idea can go to hundreds of people within seconds or minutes,"
and I said,"This is it, we've got to make a company out of this.
This is going to change everything."

And this year, the biggest breakout app uses Twitter itself.
Meerkat lets users broadcast only live video streams
over the social network.
The service has amassed more than 100,000 users in a matter of days.
And, clearly, in the right hands, it has potential,
though many streams are broadcasting so much nauseating wobble cam,
it makes YouTube look positively high production.
The fledgling service is already experiencing growing pains,
fixing a security flaw with users able to hijack another user's
video streams and it faces challenges from Twitter itself,
which has just bought a rival service called Periscope.
It's now stopped Meerkat from automatically notifying followers
of their live broadcasts.

It uses Bluetooth iBeacons strategically placed to help
people connect with each other.

And once upon a time, a certain photo sharing app was just
a twinkle in a plucky college graduate's eye.
Instagram began life four and a half years ago,
yeah, only four and a half years ago.
Its retro filters and startlingly simple style caught on
and in just a year and a half, before funders Kevin Systrom
and Mike Krieger could say "selfie",
they had 100 million users signed up.
in 2012, Facebook got in on the action,
buying the company for a cool 1 billion.
And proving it's more than just a home for hipsters
and their feline photos,
Instagram announced late last year that it had just reached
300 million active monthly users,
overtaking the mighty Twitter.
Jonathan Blake sat down with the company's founder
and CEO Kevin Systrom, who seems to think
he's only just getting started.

You look at some of the world's largest social networks
like Facebook that surpassed one billion people
and you realise more and more people are signing up for using smartphones.
If you look in the UK, I mean, just in the last year,
we've gone from 50% of adults using smartphones to 60%.
So, I think in many ways, we are just at the beginning.

In fact, we worked very hard for it to be safe
and clean for anyone in the world over the age of 13.

On certain hashtags, you can find images of self harm

How can you reassure users
that you have the resources in place to get rid of that content?

Number one, we have very clear community guidelines that prohibit
certain types of content, some of which you just mentioned,
and there are others as well.
Secondly, we rely on our community to report things
and we act very quickly on the reported content to take it down.
It's a balance of relying on the community
and also being proactive to understand what we should do
about our policies as we develop our community all over the world.

We don't like to think in terms of timescales for that because I think
it's a process of experimentation and learning what works with advertisers.
A big part of why we have moved so deliberately is making sure
that we can introduce advertising while maintaining
growth on the platform.
We've rolled out advertising in the United States, in the UK
and now in other places, France today, and then also,
we want to make sure that people cannot only discover
their Friends photos and photos of celebrities and interests,
but photos of things happening around the world.
So, one in ten people on Instagram connected to a World Cup
related account during the World Cup.
That should be five in ten, and we need to make that possible.
But it's hard to discover accounts today on Instagram,
it's hard to discover photos around events.
Those are the types of problems we want to solve within
the next 12 months.

and hopefully, he's excited about working with Instagram as well.

who's made a living out of making pictures look cool.
I'm at the Design Museum, a place where everything looks cool
and while I wait to see if some of it will rub off on me,
I'm checking out an exhibition dedicated to
the ever-increasing number of health gadgets in our lives.

It's been a difficult week for Uber.
A court in Germany has banned the company's low-cost Uber Pop service
after it decided it contravened transport laws.
Uber also had its Paris offices raided by French police
investigating the Uber Pop service, while 30 people liked
to the company have been charged with running
an illegal taxi firm in South Korea.
Uber said its South Korean staff had not broken any laws
and called the Paris raid disproportionate.

clarifying what can and can't be posted on its pages.
The social network offered updates relating to several subjects
including nudity, hate speech and violent and graphic content.
The guidance comes in the same week that the company announced
a way to send and receive money from friends over its messenger app.
The service will be rolled out in the USA over the coming months.

A new 3-D printing process that claims to be up to 100 times
faster than traditional 3-D printing has been shown off
at the TED conference in Vancouver.
The process uses light and oxygen to create objects
and is called continuous liquid interface production technology,
or CLIP, if you'd rather avoid using lots of big words.
The method was inspired by the film Terminator 2, in which
the evil terminator arises from a metallic liquid pool.

Uber社のポップサービスは日本国内でも問題となっています。高付加価値ローコスト
の個人タクシー操業は国内法に違反するサービスではなく、省庁との事前の話し合い
では認可が取れていたそうです。しかし、タクシー事業者からの強い批判が寄せられ、
省庁の指示で停止状態となっています。サービスの発想は非常に優れていると思いま
すが、収入の安定しないタクシー運転手の取り分を食いつぶすようなサービスとなるた
め、違法ではなかったとしても国内での操業は難しいものとなるでしょう。仮に国内の都
心で広がったとしても、利用するのは政治家・企業上役・ベンチャー企業の社長といった
人間に限られ、格差社会を象徴するサービスの１つとなりそうです。

３Dプリンタの話題について、“液体金属”という訳で妙に懐かしい気分になりました。
ターミネーター2は“Robert Patrick”の悪役ぶりが際立った作品で、主人公サイドより
も私の記憶には強く残っています。笑顔を一切見せず、人間らしい感情も一切出さず、
執拗に迫る演技（その力量）は、見る者の注意を強烈に引き付ける魅力がありました。
ナンバリングの“3”や“4”の作品には、そういった没入感が欠けているように思います。

前半のアップを想定しています。

日経平均は豪快に下げました。権利落ち日を狙った2日連続の豪快な下げとなってい
ますが、分析指数を見る限りは下げ止まりとは言えません。ヒストグラムはマイナス値に
入っているものの、乖離率は十分に下がっていません。12月17日と1月16日を基準とし
た場合、12月17日は（-3.36）、1月16日は（-2.63）に対して、現在の乖離率は（1.08）と若
干高い値を示しています。その基準日の下げ幅を想定するなら18500円～18700円前後
までの下限を目途に戦略を練った方が良さそうです。前日までの急な下落の反動で一時
的な上昇を見せたとしても、しばらくは警戒感を意識した調整基調の推移となりそうです。
